Denman Island Atelier Handmade Organic Wool Pillow

September 17, 2015

We are so happy to find uses for things that are normally discarded as trash.

In this case, we handmake an organic wool pillow from start to finish right here on Denman Island. We start with wool shorn from local pet sheep raised on open organic pasture. This wool would normally be burned as waste as the sheep owners do not know what to do with the wool.

We take the wool and wash it eight times with organic soap and spring water. We then put the washed unbleached & undyed wool through a wooden heritage hand-picker. The picked wool is then layered inside a 100% organic cotton twill ticking. Our small atelier takes care to keep a clean, pure environment throughout the production process.

An optional organic cotton, linen, or hemp pillowcase is also handcrafted using only pure organic fabrics.

There is absolutely no cruelty involved in the making of our organic wool pillows. The sheep are happy the big muddle cloak of winter is shorn in spring. We smile while remembering an article we recently read about an Australian sheep owner who finally sheared his sheep which was in dire need of shearing: the resulting shorn wool was made into 25 sweaters!

Our organic wool pillow is sweatshop-free, of course.

And voila! Waste turns into a beautiful night's sleep. The 9" x 14" size of the organic wool pillow is perfect for nightly sleep as well as for travel and children's beds.
