Finally, 100% Organically Grown European Cannabis Hemp Car Seat Cover for non-toxic everyday travel!

At the Rawganique Atelier, there's nothing that motivates us like a challenge. Since our humble beginnings in 1997, one of the most popular requests from customers was that we make a non-toxic car seat cover. In our modern life, where a car is often considered a necessity of life, we tend to forget that, while undeniably useful, a car is also one of the most toxic possessions we will come into contact with, often on an extended daily basis. But making an organic car seat cover like our hemp car seat cover comes with it many challenges. We have to strike a balance between making a hemp car seat cover that is easy to take on and off for occasional washing, one with the right fabric texture that will stay in place and not slide around, and to find a pattern that will fit as many front car seats as possible.

OK, now on to the behind the scenes of our 100% Organic Hemp Car Seat Cover!

It took us a long while to develop the concept of a dual layer of hemp woven fabric and hemp knit fabric for our hemp car seat cover. This gives a slight padding to the hemp car seat cover.  The 100% hemp ribbed knit provides some friction so you're not sliding around on the hemp car seat cover. It took us about 3 months of experimenting with different patterns and different anchoring methods for our hemp car seat cover. After many trials, we settled on the hook system behind and under the seat to anchor the hemp car seat cover in place.

At Rawganique Atelier, we aim to produce pure organic products from end to end: we grow, weave, knit, and sew for true purity. The same with our creation of the world's first and only organic hemp car seat cover. We start by weaving a soft and smooth 100% organic European hemp fabric as the base and then sew on to this layer a specially designed 100% organic European hemp ribbed knit. And on goes the 100% hemp taping all around for seam trims. We have had so much fun working on this project that is close to many customers' hearts. If only in a small way, our hemp car seat cover acts as a layer of protection against the toxins found in the typical car seat. And for chemically sensitive and allergic folks, having a 100% natural and organic hemp car seat cover is a must.

Let us now go over the toxic substances that are found in a typical car. And even if a car claims to be "eco-friendly", perhaps in a way that it uses fuel efficiently or incorporates hybrid or electric technology, the fact remains that all the outfittings inside the car often have highly toxic components. The average American spends 1.5 hours everyday in the car, and during that time inhales many toxic fumes from volatile organic compounds which outgas from car seats, car consoles, etc... That's a lot of toxic gases over a year. And the outgassing gets a lot worse on a hot day, especially if the car is closed up in the sun. This is why it's important to let your car "air" out after it's been in the sun before you go inside your car.

Here are some of the worst offenders in terms of chemicals found in the average car:

  • PVC Vinyl (or polyvinyl chloride) — this human-made toxic substance is found in almost every aspect of modern life because it is a useful materials for buildings and trims. It can be molded to almost any shape and is rot-resistant (the common bacteria and critters know better than to break this toxic substance by ingesting). The worst thing about it is that it keeps outgasing volatile organic compounds for a very long time, to the extent that the US government called on aban of PVC shower curtains, which is dangerous to our lungs as PVC outgases more in the warm environment of the shower and our pores are more open during a hot shower. Oh and of course the warm environment of a car in the sun worsens the outgassing of PVC chemicals and toxins, too. PVC in cars can be found in shift knobs, panels, center consoles, instrument panels,  armrests, door trims, and exterior window seals.
  • Brominanted flame retardants and lead. This is bad stuff for us living creatures!!! By law, all the children's car seats and car seats in general are soaked in flame retardant chemicals. And our skin comes into direct contact with these chemicals. It is something that is very difficult for our bodies to get rid of once lodged inside our internal organs. One of the most toxic in this category is a chemical called deca-brominated diphynyl ether, which is in the process of being banned in many states and many countries in Europe.

So beware of the "new car" smell, just like the "new house" smell that has made thousands of people sick enough to have to stay away from their new homes for a number of months until the volatile organic compunds have been partially aired out enough that the new homeowners can tolerate their own homes.

So the best we can do to protect ourselves is to always park cars in the shade with windows slightly rolled down at all times, if possible. If you have to go inside a car that has been in the sun, be sure to roll down the windows and let the toxic gases air out for a few minutes before you go inside. Leave the windows rolled down if possible. Don't turn on the air conditioning system right away, as the air conditioner would just push hot air through the system, recirculating the toxic chemicals that have been building up inside your car. If the weather and pollution levels permit, it's best to keep your windows rolled down and not avail yourself of the air conditioning system. Fresh air is the best air to breathe.
