Almond Dye: Mordant-free Natural Organic Dye

October 20, 2015

At the Rawganique Homestead, we live by the philosophy waste not, want not. In autumn, when we harvest our almonds off the tree, we find uses for the outside fruits + hulls as well as the sweet almond pits inside (a delicious source of vegan protein). And the perfect use for the peach-like outside fruit is for dyeing our organic yarns and garments and bedding.

We have used the almond fruits for cold water dye, hot water dye, vinegar dye, and baking soda dye. The resulting colors range from cheerful oregano greens to beige, to tan, to darker brown, depending on the age of the almond fruits and if they have gone through hot or cold water soaks.

We use both fresh almond fruits as well as dried almond fruits to dyed our organic garments and bedding.

We love love love organic almond dyes because they are mordant-free and turn what would otherwise have been waste into something incredibly useful and beautiful.

Handmade takes time. Hand harvesting is labor-intensive. But it's all worth it, as the result if artisanal, timeless, chemical-free, and naturally gorgeous. And most importantly, pure and chemical-free. store.rawganique.com
